“Amazing experience in Kyoto”

It's my best decision to choose Haraguchi San's house.

It was just me and my husband who owned this house during our 2-day's stay, so it seemd very luxurious. Apart from the cute house itself, it is Haraguchi San's kindness that made my trip even more momerable! He drove us to the Kurama area, very far away from the main city. And I can say that Kurama/Kibune is one of the best places I have visited in Kyoto! My pictures below will show you how the house looks like, and I believe you will love it!

“A gem of a location with a wonderful host”

My husband, daughter and I stated for 3 nights at Tensien in Kyoto. This is a wonderful place.

It's within walking distance to numerous historic sites, restaurants and shops, but it still in a natural, peaceful environment.

The home itself was very clean and the tatama mats with futons were surprisingly comfortable.

We had only reserved one room but the hosts gave us a second room (and the run of the house) at no additional charge.

Our host, Mr. Haraguchi, took us on two tours of Kyoto, to locations of our choice.

He also took us to "secret" locations that are largely unknown by tourists. It was wonderful to have a personal guide.

On our last day, Mr. Haraguchi took us to one of his favorite restaurants and then ordered for us, selecting the correct quantity of food and also the best choices for that restaurant.

Truly a personal touch. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer and that we didn't get a chance to see Mr. Haraguchi's studio. (He is a renowned potter.)

“Loved my visit to this beautiful and unique home”

Staying at Tenseian was one of the highlights of my 2-week trip to Japan.

The house is old, beautiful, and full of character.

It's decorated with attractive pottery handmade by Haraguchi san.

(He is an artist with work in the British Museum's collection.)

he rooms are spacious (especially compared to what you'd find at a more typical Japanese inn).

The location is also fantastic -- a 10-15 minute walk from Gion.

What made my visit to Tenseian truly magical though was Haraguchi san's hospitality.

He picked us up from the train station, drew us a map of the area, helped us make a reservation at his favorite sukiyaki restaurant (which was delicious), and spent a whole afternoon taking us to two hard-to-get-to tourist spots (the golden pavilion and the Arashiyama bamboo grove).

I would highly recommend Tenseian to anyone who wants more than a cookie-cutter hotel experience.
